Online Learning Readiness July 23, 2009
Getting an online degree is a significant investment of your time and money and, therefore, it is important to determine your online learning readiness. By looking at the big picture, you can prepare accordingly and improve your chances for success. Here are a few things to consider before committing to an online degree program:
- Accreditation. The only schools worth considering for an online degree are schools that are accredited, or have been reviewed and evaluated by a valid accrediting agency that is recognized by either the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) or the US Department of Education. Accredited schools are the only schools that are valued by potential employers or other colleges or universities you might want to transfer credits to. There are many online schools out there that will take your money and provide you with a worthless degree - they are called diploma mills. Take great care to make sure the online school you are considering has an accreditation that is recognized by the CHEA or US Department of Education.
- Materials. Another important aspect of online learning readiness is having the proper materials, including access to a computer with Internet service as well as certain software and any other program specific materials, such as textbooks.
- Workspace. Having a workspace that is comfortable and conducive to studying is essential to your success with an online degree program. Whether you set up a space in the basement or go to your library, it is important to know where that space is and set it up prior to starting an online course.
- Self-Discipline. Online students with the most success are students who have the self-discipline to work without structure and at their own pace. Time management skills are crucial to completing courses, especially for busy adults with full or part-time jobs and/or families.
- Time. Americans are notorious multi-taskers and are accustomed to being “on the go”, tackling many projects or goals all at once. When considering your online learning readiness, you might want to slow down for a few moments to make sure that you have the time to put into an online degree before you spend your money on it.
Slowing down in order to think ahead and consequently prepare for the events of our future are excellent skills to develop and apply to every aspect of life. Before plunging forward with an online degree, take the time to look at your life, your time, your surroundings, your means and your level of commitment. Once you have informed yourself of what you can expect from the course as well as your self, you can feel confident in your decision to either pursue an online degree or perhaps postpone it until you have more certainty.
