What are Online Degree Completion Programs? October 19, 2009
Online degree completion programs are yet another way online education can offer a unique opportunity for non traditional students to get a degree that they otherwise might not be able to.
Sure, online learning is an excellent (and practically obvious) option for adult learners with full-time jobs and/or families, for military personnel who are fulfilling their service requirements abroad, and for the millions who are out of work or looking for a career change, career boost, or job security.
But what about the students who have completed a certain amount of college credits, took a break from school, and are now interested in getting that degree? Bingo! Online degree completion programs to the rescue!
What kind of degrees can I get through online degree completion programs?
Most schools offer online degree completion programs for associate, bachelor’s, master’s, and even doctoral degrees in a variety of subjects, from business to teaching.
How long will the online degree completion program take?
The amount of time it will take to complete an online degree completion program depends on how many credits you already have, the program you choose, and the pace of your work. The more credits you have, in most cases, the less credits you have to take, and the less time to get your desired degree.
Some programs offer a degree within a certain time frame provided you meet specific requirements, such as having an associate degree or a certain number of credits. Keep in mind that since the classes are online and most likely will be done at your own pace, the amount of time it takes will depend largely on you.
Are there any ways I can get ahead in credits?
Prior to signing up for an online degree completion program, you should consider taking one or more CLEP examinations. The CLEP (College Level Examination Program) is a series of 34 exams on a range of subjects that when passed (the score required for college credit varies for each college) may result in college credits. Students taking the CLEP are rewarded for prior learning whether it is from former schooling, professional, or life experience. One CLEP exam could give a student anywhere from 3 to 12 credits.
Note: different colleges have different policies regarding CLEP exams and not all colleges participate, so be sure to find that out prior to taking a CLEP exam.
Can I get financial aid for an online degree completion program?
Financial aid for online degree completion programs is available in the same way it always is. Talk to your college’s financial aid office to get the application (FAFSA) information.
Online Education Strikes Again
Going back to school after being out for a while can seem like a daunting task. An online degree completion program can give you the convenience and flexibility necessary to finally achieve your education goal and hope for a better future.
