Enroll in College, Invest in Coffee Maker November 2, 2009

Nowadays, when you enroll in college, particularly community college, you must prepare for some unorthodox and creative efforts on schools’ behalf to find ways to accommodate you and the millions of other students coming out in droves to pursue a college degree.

As community colleges do their best to avoid turning the large numbers of students who’ve recently enrolled in college degree programs away, they have come up with some interesting adjustments.

Late Night and Early Morning School

Add coffee, sugar and push-ups to the list of school supplies and requirements for the late night or early morning classes that some community colleges are having in order to allow students to enroll in college degree programs at their schools. The late night classes begin after 11pm and run as late as 2:30am. The early morning classes start as early as 6am. Community colleges must find the most dynamic teachers to lead these late night classes, keeping students interested and awake.

Parking, Anyone?

Finding the space to place the newly enrolled masses of students at community college is as challenging as finding the time the to teach them. Some colleges are renting space at other locations to hold classes. One school turned their tennis courts into parking lots.

Avoiding Eliminating, Waiting and Disappearing Classes

As the recession pushes the jobless and high school graduates looking to save money on their education to the more affordable and accessible community colleges, the sheer numbers prove too much for some schools.  Crushed by the enrollment boom, some community colleges have had to eliminate classes, add waiting lists and not add new classes to their programs.

The Government Wants You to Enroll in College

President Obama is counting on community colleges to educate the millions of non traditional students needed for their leadership and skills to stimulate the economy and keep America strong and thriving. The Obama administration plans to invest $12 billion towards making that dream a reality, changing the way traditional American students get a college degree. This means that the students who need a degree most can enroll in college and get one without staying up until 2:30am or parking on a tennis court.
