Education Requirements
Counseling positions require at least a bachelor’s degree and most often a master’s degree. Different states have different licensing and education requirements for counselors but most require a master’s degree.
Job Outlook
The job outlook for the counseling field is very good due to a general increased awareness of counseling services and a need to replace those leaving the field for a variety of reasons. Substance abuse and behavioral disorder counselors, marriage and family counselors, and mental health counselors will see the most growth.
Counseling Salary Information
The median annual earnings for counselors in May 2006 were $47,530, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
